Felixmüller, Conrad. 1897 Dresden - 1977 Berlin-Zehlendorf. Two children with tomcat [Bauernkinder mit Kater]. 1942. oil/canvas, signed o. l. C. Felixmüller, verso on stretcher titled a. dated Bauernkinder mit Kater 1942, Spielmann 918, 87 x 75 cm, framed 90 x 87,5 cm.- After the loss of the Berlin apartment in the bombardments of the 2nd World War Felixmüller sought asylum in the countryside. There he discovered a wealth of new motifs, such as the boys and girls of the peasant families with whom he found shelter. The painting shows a gradual colorfulness even in the shadowed parts. The earlier expressiveness has given way to a cautious, quiet style of painting, in which human sympathy is no less intense and expressive. Cf. D. Gleisberg, C. Felixmüller - Leben und Werk, Dresden 1982.
