After stations at the Hamburg Kunstgewerbeschule and the Düsseldorf Kunstakademie, he took classes at the Berlner Kunstgewerbemuseum, where he later also taught, and from 1910 was a member of several avant-garde artist groups dedicated to Expressionism. Under the Nazi regime, he was banned from working and his work, which also included corporate scenography and decorative arts, was defamed as ''degenerate''.
