Thiele, Johann Alexander. 1685 Erfurt - 1752 Dresden. Attributed. Rocky river landscape with figures. Oil/copper, unsigned, verso inscribed Sammlung Brose Berlin u. Sammlung Walther Unus Berlin, 28 x 37 cm, minimal craquelée, framed 36 x 45 cm.- The present painting joins the typical Thiele prospectuses of the Electoral Saxon landscape of the Elbe valley between Meissen, Dresden and Pirna or also of the Osterzgebirge - specifically the table mountain in the background reminds of the fortress Königstein. In 1729, Thiele became court painter to Prince Günther I of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen in Arnstadt. He also worked for the courts in Brunswick and Kassel, and from 1738 until his death he was court painter to August III of Electoral Saxony in Dresden. According to tradition, the painting should bear the signature A. Thiele and the partly illegible. Unfortunately, we cannot verify this information.
