Bradley, William Henry. 1868 Boston - 1962 La Mesa. Pausias and Glycera. Circa 1895. probably lithograph/paper, partly colored in gold, signed Bradley in the stone and, sheet 30.5 x 21.5 cm, illustration for ''Fringilla or Tales in verse'' by Richard Doddridge Blackmore, unframed. Bradley is one of the most famous American illustrators at the end of the 19th century. Strongly influenced by Art Nouveau and artists such as Aubrey Beardsley or Wiliam Morris, he designed posters, covers, advertisements and illustrated books. Considered his masterpiece are the illustrations for ''Friniglla,'' published by Borrows Brothers in 1895. The present sheet shows the illustration without the border.
