Breitner, Georg Hendrik. 1857 Rotterdam - 1923 Amsterdam. Street scene with horse-drawn carriage and passers-by. Oil/wood, monogr. GHB lower right, 22 x 45 cm, framed 38 x 60.5 cm.- Important representative of Amsterdam Impressionism. After discontinuing his studies at The Hague Academy, Breitner settled in Amsterdam in 1886. It is less the cheerful impressionist landscape impressions that interested him, but urban motifs that he found in the Amsterdam neighborhoods of Jordaan and around the street Rokin, which was characterized by lively pedestrian and streetcar traffic, and captured in rapid brushstrokes. The present painting is a typical example.
