Schaefer, Maximilian. 1851 - Berlin - 1916. itinerant musicians. Oil/canvas, signed M Schaefer lower left, verso on stretcher fragment. Label of the Great Berlin Art Exhibition 1915(?) and another label with address in Berlin-Charlottenburg, verso a small patch mounted, 72.5 x 111.5 cm, framed 95 x 133 cm.- The genre painter, illustrator and writer studied at the academies in Berlin and Weimar and exhibited at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition. The present painting was exhibited there in 1915 under the title ''Wandering Musicians''. Schaefer was rector of the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts in 1896 and taught at the Berlin Academy and Museum of Decorative Arts.
